As we unite today to commemorate World Pulses Day 2025, we are bringing attention to the critical role pulses play in building a more sustainable and health-conscious world. Pulses are the unsung heroes of nutrition - tiny, nutrient-dense powerhouses. On February 10, World Pulses Day, we take a tasty journey to honor these legume gems that not only make our food delicious but also help keep the earth healthy.
As we come together to appreciate these small but mighty seeds, let's examine the many reasons why pulses hold a special place on our plates and in our hearts.
Who came up with the idea?
The FAO came up with the idea of World Pulses Day as part of a larger initiative to highlight the benefits of pulses. During the 2016 International Year of Pulses, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations launched this project, showcasing the significance of pulses in tackling global issues.
In 2019, February 10 was formally designated as World Pulses Day in recognition of this accomplishment. This annual event emphasizes the importance of pulses in promoting environmental sustainability, maintaining food security, and enhancing nutrition around the world.
Why are pulses important crops?
Pulses don’t just feed people, they heal ecosystems. Here’s how:
Nutritional Fixers Pulses and soil bacteria work together as nitrogen fixers to transform atmospheric nitrogen into natural fertilizer, improving soil quality and lowering the need for synthetic fertilizers.
Health Benefits With so many health benefits, health professionals commonly recommend including pulses in the daily diet. Due to their low-fat content and high soluble fiber content, pulses can help control blood sugar levels and reduce cholesterol.
The high dietary fiber content of pulses makes them very good for your digestive system. They support healthy guts and help avoid constipation, both of which improve general health. Pulses are therefore a game-changer for your digestive and gut health, which is their greatest advantage. Include these beans in your diet to get tenfold benefits.
Food Security Pulses are a crucial crop for farmers since they can be sold and eaten, which promotes economic stability and household food security. In many nations, pulses are a staple food and a significant source of food security, particularly for people without access to meat and other foods high in protein.
Environmental Benefits Pulses improve fertility and increase farmland productivity by fixing nitrogen in the soil organically. They improve biodiversity and aid in disease and pest management when utilized as cover crops or for intercropping. Additionally, pulses reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and aids in the fight against climate change.
Since many pulse crops can withstand drought, they are ideal for growing in areas with scarce water supplies.
How to Celebrate World Pulses Day?
Add beans, lentils, or peas to salads, soups, stews, or casseroles to include pulses in your meals.
Post pulse-based recipes on social media to inspire friends and family to try new foods.
Buying pulses from sustainable or local sources will help support pulse farmers and suppliers.
Inform people about the advantages of pulses for sustainability and nutrition, as well as how they help create a better planet.
Throw a dinner party with friends or family that focuses on pulses and includes a range of foods made with pulses.
Raise awareness by holding dietary challenges, such as "Meatless Monday," when the main protein is pulses.
Enhance the environmental benefits of pulses by promoting plant-based diets that reduce carbon emissions.
On 10 February we celebrate World Pulses Day. Let's not only enjoy the flavor and texture of these adaptable beans but also recognize their significant impact on the environment and human health.
