India Launches First Agri-Export Unit at JNPT: Boosting Agriculture & Logistics



  • India to come up with the first agri-export unit at JNPT as per report on Friday. For this purpose, the Shipping Minister of India Sarbananda Sonowal has allocated Rs. 284.19 Cr for integrated Agri-export facility.

    It is a notable collaborative effort of both agriculture and logistic industry where it will address shortcomings in logistic sector and help extent shelf life of the products.

    Both logistics and agricultural industries are tying to focus on the sustainable future. The collaboration of these two sectors can help achieve the goal of sustainable future with long term benefits to both ecosystem and economy as a whole.

    This will cater to export items such as non-basmati rice, maize, spices, onion and wheat.

    This is all-in-one state-of-the-art agricultural facility at port spanning 67422 sq m. It will address ineffiency in logistics and extended shelf life of agricultural products.

    The ministry explained stating, "Small exporters, in particular, will benefit from the port-based facility, improving their capabilities in logistics, container booking, cold chain logistics and export operations. The estimated export capacity increase includes a frozen store of 1,800 tonnes, a cold store of 5,800 tonnes and dry warehouses with a capacity of 12,000 tonnes for grains, cereals and dry cargo," the ministry said.

    As Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is the dominant gateway for frozen meat products and marine products, the new facility will also support the exporters from areas away from Mumbai, it added.

    Expected benefits include better prices for agricultural goods, job creation and overall growth in the agricultural sector. It will also empower farmers and exporters, stimulate demand and foster rural development," it said.
