A Real Life Example

Ganga Ram Sepat from Kalakh village, Phulera has turned the barren fields of Rajasthan into an oasis of abundance via his innovative farming methods.

He opted for Organic farming in 2012, where at first, due to his inquisitive nature he stumbled upon the fact that usage of chemical fertilizers was the cause of cancer in certain cases, which made him rethink his approach to farming as his father-in-law went through the same painful experience.

Loaded with knowledge and a resolve to find a possible solution to this problem, Ganga ram went out and studied excessively about Organic farming, where he found that it had the potential of approaching farming without having the devastating outcomes as the former approach.

Sepat after adopting organic farming practices has achieved a remarkable annual income of 40 lakh rupees. What's intriguing is that he divides this sum equally with his two brothers. Furthermore, he has been honored with the title of India's Millionaire Horticulture Farmer.

Farming Techniques and Water Conservation Strategies

Sepat with just 4 hectares of land cultivated cucumbers with polyhouses, with very minimal pesticide use. A polyhouse offers an environment that is conducive to rapid insect and disease proliferation. To counter this he employed biorational chemicals and bio cultures such as Pseudomonas and Trichoderma along with Bioagents like Beauveria Bassian and Metarhizium Enisoply as crop protectants. He diversified his crops by cultivating exotic vegetables like broccoli, lettuce, China cabbage, and red cabbage, all sourced from foreign seeds that he replicates. Further, Sepat emphasizes the importance of water conservation in his village, where water scarcity prevails. To address this challenge, he constructed a farm pond capable of holding 1 crore liters of water. For irrigation, the farmer has opted for a drip irrigation system, reserving the use of sprinkler systems to a minimum. He underscores that drip irrigation is the primary method employed, highlighting its efficiency and effectiveness in water utilization.

Balancing Tradition and Technology

Sepat aims to communicate a message to fellow farmers, stressing the significance of embracing sustainable farming methods. Reflecting on his own and his colleagues' experiences in cultivating within protected environments, he showcases their joint efforts in establishing what is now recognized as "Mini Israel," showcasing around 1500 poly houses. These pioneering structures not only include poly houses but also integrate solar panels, drip irrigation systems, and other contemporary technologies.
